What a Move to Indiana Has to Offer

Indiana is a borough of Pennsylvania and the seat of Indiana County. In 2013, the borough officially became part of the Pittsburg metropolitan area, but expansion of that region made this true years ago. The 2013 U.S. census indicates that the borough measures 1.76 square miles and is home to about 14,000 residents.

The borough was originally a coal-mining town, and although most of the coal mines in the area have closed, the surveying and production of natural gas has picked up much of the slack. Indiana markets itself as the “Christmas Tree Capital of the World,” and it is the area in which the Christmas Tree Growers Association was founded. While the title is not technically true any longer, Christmas trees are still an important cog in the local economy. Natural gas and Christmas trees aside, Indiana’s most important industry is arguably education. The borough’s largest employer is the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, which is actually the largest of 14 institutions in the state’s higher education system.

Despite its proximity to the Pittsburgh metro, rustic life is still celebrated here, and many of the dining and entertainment options are a reflection of that. For those who love the outdoors, Memorial Park is a must-visit. The two-acre park offers bicycling and hiking trails, and during the summer, it serves as host to a series of free concerts. Indiana is also the hometown of actor Jimmy Stewart, who’s probably best known for the 1946 film “It’s a Wonderful Life.” An entertainment highlight of the area is the Jimmy Stewart Museum, which showcases the actor’s accomplishments in film, radio and television. The museum is situated on the third floor of the Indiana Public Library.
