Oregon is a Pacific Northwest U. S. state, with a breezy Pacific coastline, volcanic mountains, and lots of bodies of water west of the Cascades, part of the Pacific Ocean's Ring of Fire.  US 101, known for its resorts, beaches, and parks, runs along the rainy, mountainous, Douglas Fir-lined coast. The state’s northern border, the mouth of the Columbia River, meets the coast and leads inland, paralleled by a route passing scenic waterfalls.  Oregon is well-known for both its wild, natural beauty and its charming urban communities.  The Beaver State’s only national park is Crater Lake National Park, the remnants of a destroyed volcano and the deepest lake in America.

One-fourth of the country’s total llama population resides in this state.  There are no sales, liquor, or restaurant taxes in Oregon, and it is the only U. S. state to have a two-sided flag design.  Being a coastal state, Oregon generally experiences mild weather, but most of the state is prone to snowfall in the winter months.  In the summer, the sands of the coast glow as a result of tiny bioluminescent phytoplankton called dinoflagellates washing ashore. Some notable people from Oregon include River Phoenix, Beverly Cleary, Courtney Love, and Matt Groening, the creator behind The Simpson and Futurama.

"Keep Portland Weird,” is the unofficial slogan of the largest city in the state.  Portland took its name from Portland, Maine in a coin toss where the other option was Boston.  The city is a cultural center for music and arts.  The punk venue where it was believed Nirvana front man, Kurt Cobain, met Courtney Love once stood in Portland before it was demolished in 2011.  The city has a high volume of movie theaters that serve beer and one of the highest per capita concentrations of breweries.  The first wiki website was created in Portland in 1994.  The city has over 70 food cart and truck vendors, making it a good destination for street food.
