What a Move to Muskegon Has to Offer
The metropolis that originated as a fur trading post and Native American village lies along the western central edge of the state and borders Lake Michigan. Amazing scenery, recreational and educational opportunities are plentiful here. The community strives to be a safe haven for raising families, and housing is less expensive compared to state averages. There are more than one dozen neighborhoods from which to choose and five exist along the waterfront.
According to the 2010 census, the city of Muskegon had 38,401 residents. The larger metropolitan area boasts 172,188. Of the thousands of families that make their home here, one-third have school-aged children. In addition to having multiple facilities that accommodate children from preschool through high school, Muskegon serves as home to Baker College and the Muskegon Community College, which offers programs from Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University and Western Michigan University.
Cultural opportunities include the Frauenthal Theater that presents Broadway musicals. The Muskegon Museum of Art houses a collection of traditional and contemporary exhibits. The West Michigan Symphony Orchestra also presents live performances. The Lakeshore Museum Center and the Hackley & Hume Historic Site provide a glimpse of the past. The Hackley & Hume mansions offer tours of the historic homes and contain exhibits commemorating the Ottawa and Pottawatomi peoples and fur traders that first settled the area.
Waterfront attractions include the USS Silversides Submarine Museum, the USS LST-393 amphibious ship and the USCGC McLane retired Coast Guard vessel. The waterfront remains a popular recreation area for camping and picnicking. The Lakeshore Trail spans 12 miles and is open to cyclists, joggers and walkers. Boating and fishing are made available via the four-boat launching areas and a comprehensive marina.
