Known for its Southern charm and lagniappe goodness - which are small gifts given to customers - Shreveport, Louisiana, is a commercial and cultural hub of the Ark-La-Tex region, where Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas meet. It is the third-largest city in Louisiana with a population of about 201,000, as of the 2012 U.S. Census, and sits along the Red River. Shreveport was founded in 1836 by the Shreve Town Company, a corporation established to develop a town at the juncture of the Red River and the Texas Trail, which was an overland route to the newly independent Republic of Texas.

The original town site consisted of 64 city blocks along the river and Cross Bayou, a tributary of the Red River. Today, you will find this area as the city’s central business district and a National Register of Historic Places.

As far as weather goes, Shreveport experiences sizzling summers with temperatures reaching the 90s. During the winter, averages hover around the 50s.

Attractions and Activities in Shreveport

Shreveport is stirring with things to do and and attractions to see. Make your way to your favorite off-Broadway at The Strand Theatre, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many residents enjoy trying their hand at the riverboat casinos filled with table games and slots. Others head over Texas Street Bridge for horse racing at Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, Shreveport’s sister city.

The Splash Kingdom Water Park makes waves with kids, especially in the heat of summer. Throughout the year the city plays host to a handful of festivities, ranging from Red River Revel music festival to African-American history parade celebration to Mardi Gras parades.

To learn about the history of your new home, swing by the oldest and perhaps most famous attraction, Historic Oakland Cemetery, a garden cemetery that features a botanical preserve with ancient oaks and magnolias along with sculptures and architecture.
