Pets are an Australian way of life. According to research firm Canstar, 63 per cent of households in the country own a pet - 91 per cent of those consider their pet (or pets) a part of the family.

Why are pets so important in Australia?

Australia is a country with an amazing outdoors. Everybody is connected with nature at all times - even those in the city centres. Melbourne has the Yarra River running right through its heart. Perth has Kings Park, a sprawling metropolis for wildlife. Animals are all around us, so bringing one into our homes is just a small step (although it is a big responsibility). Canstar research suggests there are 3.7 million dogs, 2.2 million cats, 7.8 million birds and almost 21 million fish kept as pets in our country. When a family moves, it's likely that they have to bring their pet as well.

Understanding pets is the first step to transporting them comfortably

We organise specialist pet transportation that allows your furry, scaly or feathery friends to be comfortable at all times. Allied moving teams also know the local quarantine regulations, and can give advice on preparing your pets for the big moving day.

If you're moving to Australia and bringing a cat or dog with you, it is vital that you understand the lead times involved, as it can take several months of planning depending on where you are relocating from. If your pet is coming from a country that is not 'approved rabies-free' by the Australian authorities, you may not be able to import them directly to Australia. In some circumstances, they may need to travel to an approved country for 50 days before being allowed into Australia.

Unless your pet is travelling from New Zealand, all pets coming into Australia must have a pre-approved import permit and they will need to spend 10 days in quarantine in Melbourne upon arrival.  Those coming in from New Zealand do not require either of these, however they do need to be checked by quarantine and cleared by customs upon arrival.
