International Move Preparation

Your preparation for international moving is one of the most vital aspects to a successful overseas relocation. Moving overseas can be a complicated process, as you are trading in your old world for a new one. For this reason, Allied provides you a guide for completing the necessary aspects of international move preparation.

Preparing for International Moving:  Surveying Possessions

To begin the international moving preparation process, one of our agent moving specialists will come to your home to explain the many services that that Allied International offers. Next, the moving specialist will perform a survey of everything in your home that will be moved – pointing out items along the way that can't be moved, such as flammable cans of paint, and items that might require special attention, such as an antique china hutch, grandfather clock or wine collection.

Your estimate will be based on the volume of goods to be shipped and/or the volume and weight of goods to be air-freighted. Accurate estimating depends on the level of detail given to the relocation consultant during this part of the international move preparation process. The more accurate the details, the more accurate the estimate.

What can you do to help?

Make sure that all items are shown in detail, including contents of drawers, cupboards, attics and garages. Items that are not currently at your home should be described accurately. If you are planning to make new purchases that will need to be included in the move, be sure to tell us during the survey.

You may decide to store some of your items in your origin country or at destination. Storage is a cost-effective solution, particularly if you have to limit your shipment size, are renting your home out while you are away or are moving into a hotel prior to finding a permanent home. Make sure to advise your international moving specialist of any storage needs you may have.

Preparing for International Moving: Protecting Possessions

Your moving specialist will discuss coverage options with you to ensure that your possessions are protected during the journey. Though it's unlikely that anything will happen, coverage gives you the security and peace-of-mind you need during your move. Acquiring coverage information is an integral part in international move preparation.

Preparing for International Moving: Documentation

Proper documentation is increasingly important due to heightened security requirements. You can rely on the expertise of your Coordinator to guide you through the process of identifying and completing the appropriate paperwork for your origin and destination countries. Don't delay as documentation is a critical part of the international move preparation process and late receipt may delay your shipment.

Preparing for International Moving: Travel

While travel throughout most of the world is considered safe, we recommend that you check with the State Department for current travel advisories and the US Embassy for local embassy information. In addition to travel advisories, embassies and consulates will also have information on what you should do in an emergency situation.

Because of heightened security measures, travelers should allow additional time for check-in. Check with your carrier or travel agent for additional information regarding air travel safety and security and related check-in requirements, baggage restrictions, etc.

After completing the international move preparation process, you will be better equipped for the demands of your overseas relocation. Preparing for an international move is of dire importance, as the best laid plans will result in the most successful international moving experience. Allied International's guide to the international move preparation process will outfit you with what you need to know, so you can focus on your exciting new adventure.
