Sierra Vista, which is Spanish for “mountain view,” is located in the southeast border of Arizona. Flanked by the San Pedro River, the city is surrounded by set of mountain ranges, including the Huachuca, Dragoon, Whetstone, Mule and Mustang. Its diverse habitat make Sierra Vista a home for both a wide variety of birds and discovery-driven residents.

Despite its proximity to Mexico, Sierra Vista has a fairly mild climate. During the summer temperatures average high-70s while they hover around high-40s in the winter.

As of the 2012 U.S. Census, Sierra Vista had a population of about 46,000, the majority of whom are employed in public administration.

Attractions and activities in Sierra Vista

Sierra Vista is made for the adventurer. With mountain ranges in its backyard, the city boasts a wealth of hiking opportunities, featuring long scenic paths that lead to incredible lookout points. There are even hiking groups that head out under the Arizona sun -  a perfect time to meet your new neighbors. There are also plenty of biking opportunities that weave across the mountain slopes.

The closeness to Mexico, mild climate and a range of habitats are a few of the reasons why Sierra Vista is considered “The Hummingbird Capital of the U.S.” For birders, southeastern Arizona is a hotspot to see rare species of two-winged wonders, including trogans, flycatchers and warbleres. During spring migration, tens of thousands of songbirds make their way north.

The city has a buzzing nightlife - but not what you’d normally expect. Cochise County experiences clear, dark night skies, making it home to a number of astronomy groups. Besides star-gazing, you can head to Dillons or Rendezvous for a beer and live music.
