Denver is the capital of the state and the most populated city in Colorado. The city is located 12 miles east of the Rocky Mountains within the South Platte River Valley. Denver is often referred to as the Mile-High City because it is 1 mile above sea level, a unique trait among the major metro areas in the country.
According to the 2014 census, more than 660,000 residents call Denver home, making Denver County one of the most populated in the state. The city was founded during a gold rush in 1858 and was incorporated three years later. There are approximately 80 different neighborhoods located in the Denver area that vary greatly in style, including enormous skyscrapers, modern suburbs and older homes dating back to the city's inception. The older, more densely designed neighborhoods feature brick buildings located close to the heart of the city.
There are over 250,000 households located within the city limits. Approximately 25 percent of the households have children, and about 35 percent are comprised of married couples, so the city is a good place to raise a family. The downtown area is a great place for single professionals advancing their careers; around 40 percent of the households in Denver consist of individuals living alone, and about 36 percent of the total population is between age 25 and 44.

Denver is one of the few cities in the country to host home games for all four major sports. The city also has more than 200 parks and over 30 recreational centers available.
