by Ricardo Ramos on Jul 28, 2020

Home to movie stars, innovative tech giants, and miles of beautiful coastline full of sandy beaches, cliffs, and mountains, California is the next stop in the top corporate destination states in the United States. As the most populous state in the nation, the Golden State is one of the country’s wealthiest and most socially and politically influential.

Every year, Allied releases an annual Magnet States Report in which we study our moving data to highlight key migration trends happening across the US. In our 2019 Magnet States Report, California was the #2 top corporate destination state and has held this position for the last 5 years. According to our data, many of the Golden State’s new residents are trading in their East Coast lifestyles for a taste of the west, with most of California’s new residents escaping the Big Apple.

In 2019, one of the top destination cities for our corporate clients was Cupertino, CA, located just south of San Francisco and in the heart of Silicon Valley. Though we are starting to see more and more leave the tech startup hub, our data shows many are interested in getting a taste of the world’s most innovative tech center.

As one of the largest economies in the US, California hosts some of the world’s most innovative and brilliant companies and continues to attract many others. Apple, Google, Intel, Walt Disney, and Paramount all call the Golden State home. California, a state for dreamers, is also home to nearly 4 million small businesses and these companies employ nearly 50 percent of the state’s workforce.

MAKE-IT-HAPPEN BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT

Many businesses flock to California to partake in the economic gold rush. As the nation’s major economic engine, California has become a magnet for businesses due to its populous state, diverse economy, flourishing talent pool, and its dreamer state of mind.

39.5 million people call California home, making the Golden State the most populous in the nation and a hub for the nation’s cultural trends. With one of the largest workforces in the US, businesses operating in California have a plethora of talent to choose from.  The state welcomes immigrants, celebrates diversity, and boasts an impressive area of high-earning and well-educated people. With a pool of 14 million employees, California’s talent pipeline is one of the largest in the nation.

Ranked fifth in the world as one of the largest economies, California has a GDP of $3.2 trillion and contributes over 14% of the US economy. The Golden State’s booming economy is also one of the nation’s most diverse with Hollywood, Silicon Valley, agriculture, and healthcare all making major contributions.

With its aspirational and fantasy-like environment, California is known for dreaming big. The Golden State is home to some of the most inspirational people and innovative companies in the nation and its ‘make-it-happen’ energy is contagious. KEY INDUSTRIES

California’s economy is driven by a wide variety of innovative industries. Agriculture, film, tech, and services are among the many business sectors booming in California.

Agriculture is one of the biggest industries in the Golden State due to its long growing season, fertile soil, and abundance of farmland. As one of the nation’s leading agriculture producers, over a third of the nation’s vegetables and two-thirds of the nation’s fruit and nuts are grown in the Golden State. With 25 million acres dedicated to farmland, California’s agriculture industry accounts for 10% of the state’s labor force.

Synonymous with tech, Silicon Valley has established California as one of the most innovative tech centers in the world. Home to many renowned tech companies, like Intel and Microsoft, California is the leading hub for tech innovation and development. As one of the fastest-growing industries in California, technology continues to rapidly grow and succeed in this state.

With all its glitz and glamour, California is home to Hollywood, the film and entertainment center of America. Media, filmmaking, and entertainment production significantly contribute to the state’s revenue. The Golden State is home to creators of dreams and fantasies that propel the state as the leading producer of entertainment.

QUALITY OF LIFE

It’s no secret that the Golden State has a high cost of living, but many migrate to the state for its great weather, diverse geography, and contagious energy. With its plethora of diversity, abundance of beaches, and endless variety of job opportunities it’s no wonder many gravitate toward California.

Though California is known for its warm and sunny climate, the state has incredibly diverse geography resulting in a wide array of climates. From the Pacific Ocean to the redwood trees, to the Mojave Desert and the Sierra Nevada mountains, California is a beautiful state with a little bit of scenery for everyone. The Central Valley, California’s agriculture center, offers residents more pronounced seasons than the coast. The northern forests of California are much cooler and wetter than the rest of the state.

With its diverse industries and abundance of businesses, California offers its residents an endless variety of job opportunities. As the largest economy in the US, ranked fifth in the world, California’s economy brings people to the state, but the lifestyle is the reason many stay.

For the last five years, California has been a popular destination among both our corporate and consumer clients and continually tops our annual Magnet States Report. Will the Golden State hold its place on our list for 2020?
