Kitchen Packing Hacks

Learn how to best pack all of the breakables and odd shaped items in your kitchen when preparing to move.

Of all the rooms in your home, the most difficult and time-intensive one to pack up isKitchen Mugs the kitchen. With so many breakables and so many odd-shaped items to box up, this area tends to require lots of specialty packing supplies to get the job done.

Fortunately, there are shortcuts you can take. These kitchen packing hacks could save you both time and money—and ensure that your belongings arrive in your new home in picture perfect condition.

>  Use plastic wrap to pack up an entire utensil tray or organizer at once. Instead of taking all your cutlery out of its organizer, use plastic wrap to hold everything in place. There might be some clattering as the silverware knocks against itself, but the tight wrap will ensure that nothing falls out of its slot.

>  Invest in disposable plates as plate protectors. One of the fastest way to pack and protect plates is to place a Styrofoam, plastic, or other disposable plate between each breakable one. These stack together easily and also ensure that the plates don’t clatter against one another in transit. (For an extra bonus, pack them in boxes vertically like records, as they’ll be more stable this way.)

>  Use dishtowels, cloth napkins, and tablecloths as padding and fillers. You have to pack up all your kitchen linens anyway—why not put them to good use as you do? Instead of purchasing packing peanuts or crumpling newspaper to protect your breakables, wrap your existing linens around the items in question. They’re all going to the same place anyway.

>  Place rubber bands around pots and their lids. Avoid the tangle of trying to fit pots and lids together by wrapping a rubber band around the complete set. This will help you keep track of all your belongings and make sure that nothing is rattling around where it shouldn’t be. (You can also put some items inside these pots, like spices or other small pantry ingredients.)

>  Pack each drawer as a unit. Avoid the disaster of forgetting where you put things or wondering if you left anything behind by keeping each kitchen drawer and cupboard intact. By following the one cupboard = one box rule, you can unpack twice as quickly once you arrive.

>  Brown bags aren’t just great for lunches—they can also be used to individually wrap cups and glasses. Place a cup inside the bag and then tuck the top around it. That way it’s secure and all in one piece.

>  Recycle your beer and wine six- and twelve-pack containers. Whenever you purchase beer or wine in large quantities, it comes in a box with built-in separators. Save these and use them to transport breakables like (you guessed it) wine, bottles of olive oil, glass tumblers, and vases.
