The railroad industry played a major role in Altoona’s growth and was founded by Robert E. Lee in 1849 as the site for a shop complex. The city was crucial in creating and designing the Gettysburg National Cemetery following the blood bath at the Battle of Gettysburg.

The Horseshoe Curve was also a significant target for eight Nazi saboteurs who made their way to the U.S. during World War II after the Germany Navy dropped them off in U-boats.
