ALLIED VAN LINES RELEASES 40th ANNUAL MAGNET STATES REPORT
Texas takes lead for third year in a row as No. 1 relocation spot in U.S., followed by North Carolina and Georgia
CHICAGO, January 30, 2008 — Individuals and families continue to be charmed by the South as thousands relocated there in 2007, according to Allied Van Lines’ 40th Magnet States Report which was released today. For the third year in a row, Texas took the lead as the No. 1 destination state in 2007, based on the report which tracks U.S. migration patterns.
Texas had the highest net relocation gain (inbound moves minus outbound moves performed by Allied Van Lines) of 2,041 in 2007. Also for the third year in a row, North Carolina placed second with a net relocation gain of 1,363, followed by Georgia in third place with a gain of 942. Colorado and Washington took fourth and fifth place respectively for states with the largest net relocation gains.
“It is easy to see why Texas is the top destination state again this year since several of its cities continue to be ranked by national studies as some of the best and most affordable places to live,” said Mike Wolfe, President of SIRVA Moving Services, Allied Van Lines' parent company. “Many North Carolina and Georgia cities are enjoying high scores for excellent livability as well.”
Texas experienced 8,287 inbound shipments and 6,246 outbound shipments by Allied, for a net relocation gain of 2,041 — just a bit lower than last year’s net gain of 2,543. The “Lone Star State” with 14,533 total shipments also ranked second behind California with 16,909 total shipments as the most mobile state (the highest volume of inbound and outbound shipments by Allied Van Lines), followed by Florida with 12,421 shipments, Illinois with 7,946 shipments and Virginia with 7,071 total shipments.
"Texas is a land of opportunity and it is no surprise that Allied Van Lines saw so many people from across the nation relocate here in such high numbers for three years straight," said Bill Hammond, President of the Texas Association of Business. "This is a great place to do business and raise a family and in the years ahead I am confident that the quality of life will only continue improving."
Outbound States
The largest net relocation losses (more outbound than inbound shipments) were experienced by Michigan, followed by New Jersey, Illinois, Florida and Pennsylvania. The downsizing of the auto industry most likely continued to affect relocations to Michigan in 2007, as Allied Van Lines’ outbound shipments of 3,022 were more than double its inbound shipments of 1,502 for the state. New Jersey experienced the second largest net relocation loss with 1,064 more outbound than inbound moves, closely followed by Illinois with a net relocation loss of 1,052, Florida with 1,023 and Pennsylvania with 868.
