Named after Helen Hunt Jackson's novel, “Ramona,” the town is a gateway to the mountain communities of San Diego County, including Julian and Santa Ysabel. As of 2010, the population of Ramona itself was just under 21,000 people, though that number has climbed yearly as more people have moved into the area. Ramona is often lumped together with a community called San Diego Country Estates for a combined population that's just over 30,000 people. Ramona is one of the few places in San Diego County where housing costs are relatively low.

The apple orchards of Julian are a short drive away.
