Coeur d’Alene, often known as simply CDA by locals, was named after the Coeur d’Alene tribe who lived here when the land was discovered in the late 18th and early 19th century by French fur traders. The name translates to “heart of an awl,” which reflects the tribe’s trader reputation as tough businessmen.
